Lesson Summary: By the end of this lesson, students should understand that when he or she is given a problem affiliated with three sides and one angle, the cosine law must be used. On the other hand, when he or she is given a problem affiliated with two sides and two angles he or she must utilize the sine law. Students should be familiarized with the cosine law of c^2= a^2+b^2-2abcosC when given two sides and one angle and told to solve for a side and cosC= a^2+b^2-c^2/2ab when given three sides and told to solve for an angle. Furthermore, students should be acquainted with the sine law of a/sinA = c/sinC. Students should also develop a profound understanding of how to use his or her graphing calculator to solve for triangles with SSA. Lastly, he or she should be able to distinguish the ambiguous cases for both cosine and sine laws and recognize when one, two, or no triangles can be created.
